Party honors activists and political leaders as it raises funds for political education

The Bay Area Union Labor Party was proud to honor IBT Vice President Cheryl Johnson as its Labor Leader of the Year at the Party’s 2008 Leadership Awards Dinner. The event was held at San Francisco’s new InterContinental Hotel on July 17.

A 38-year Teamster, Johnson started her union career working in a Toledo, Ohio warehouse, and soon came to work for Local 20. After serving as a Trustee of that Local, President Hoffa appointed her to be the Director of the IBT Human Rights Commission in 1999. She went on to serve in a variety of other capacities and was elected Central Region Vice- President in 2007. She was the first woman to be named Labor Leader of the Year.

The Party gave its Public Service Award to Kamala Harris, District Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco. The Community Awards went to Angelo Quaranta from American General Life and Tim Paulson from the San Francisco Labor Council.
